The President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, stated that the Senate would look into the loan secured by the management of the Kanu Heart Foundation hotel, without the consent of its Founder, legendary footballer, Kanu Nwankwo.
Speaking on a Point of Order raised by the Senate’s Deputy Leader, Senator Bala Ibn Na’allah, the Senate President stated that Nwankwo Kanu served Nigeria diligently, hence the Senate would look into his case.
“He was an active footballer and he also played for one of the best clubs in the United Kingdom Premier League,” the Senate President said, “There are many reasons why I am very sympathetic to this. It is key that for those people who serve this nation diligently, we must do what we can. Therefore, Chairman on Banking, look into the matter.”
Senator Na’allah, in his point of Order, emphasized that Nwankwo established a foundation known as the Kanu Heart Foundation in appreciation of his successful heart surgery in order to assist less-privileged members of society who are victims of heart-related diseases. In this regard, the foundation started a hotel where the proceeds would be used to treat other patients. However, in an apparent turn of events, the managers of the hotel secured a loan from a bank that has become non performing. Based on this, the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) has been threatening to take over the hotel.
